Fantasy analysis on recent trades: Anticipations for JJJ in Utah, Vucevic in Boston 1

As the February 5 NBA trade deadline approaches, return here for insights from our fantasy analysts Andre Snellings and Eric Moody on the latest developments.

Our NBA trade tracker is continuously updated with each transaction, assisting you in monitoring all player movements.

Which players stand to gain the most from these trades? Which ones might see a decline in their fantasy value?

Here’s the most recent information following a busy period leading up to Thursday’s deadline.

Is Jaren Jackson Jr. the third option in Utah?

Snellings: The Jazz have secured Jackson, John Konchar, Jock Landale, and Vince Williams Jr. from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, Georges Niang, and three first-round selections. Several players involved were part of both teams’ rotations and may influence fantasy streaming options, but we will concentrate on the fantasy ramifications for the key player in this trade, Jackson.

Jackson ranked second on the Grizzlies in scoring with an average of 19.2 PPG, just behind Ja Morant’s 19.5 PPG and ahead of Santi Aldama, who averaged 14.0 PPG. However, with Morant missing 28 of 48 games this season, Jackson has often been the leading scorer for the Grizzlies. On the current Jazz roster, Jackson would likely become the third offensive option, following Lauri Markkanen (27.4 PPG) and Keyonte George (24.2 PPG). Jackson is an effective outside shooter and excels at driving to the basket and finishing near the rim. He operates in similar areas as Markkanen and will probably alternate with him as the pick-setter for George in pick-and-roll/pop situations.

While Jackson’s scoring volume may decrease slightly, his shooting percentages could improve. Prior to the trade, Jackson was approximately 60th in points and 30th in category leagues. Following the trade, he is expected to drop to around the top 80 in points and top 50 in category leagues.

How Nikola Vucevic fits in Boston, and Anfernee Simons in Chicago

Moody: The Celtics and Bulls executed one of the most significant frontcourt-backcourt exchanges as the trade deadline nears, with Vucevic moving to Boston and Simons heading to Chicago, along with second-round picks going to Chicago. For Boston, this trade addresses a clear need. After experiencing a loss of depth in recent seasons, the Celtics were in search of a dependable, floor-spacing center, and Vucevic fulfills that requirement effectively.

The seasoned big man has recorded averages of 16.9 PPG, 9.0 RPG, and 3.8 APG this season. Since entering the league in 2011-12, Vucevic has the highest number of double-doubles (578) and is one of only three players in league history to achieve at least 10,000 rebounds and 900 made three-pointers. Over the past five seasons, only Karl-Anthony Towns has made more three-pointers among centers. Vucevic’s capacity to stretch the floor should enhance Boston’s offensive dynamics while solidifying their presence in the paint.

From Chicago’s standpoint, Simons offers a crucial scoring boost. He has averaged 14.2 PPG off the bench this season and leads all reserves with 130 three-pointers made. His shooting efficiency provides the Bulls with a reliable perimeter playmaker as they restructure their roster around younger guards and future assets. Both players are on expiring contracts, granting each team flexibility for the future. Boston also benefits from significant salary relief, while Chicago acquires a younger scoring option with potential.
