RICHMOND, B.C. – The U.S. concluded the Select Series on a positive note, achieving a clean sweep on the final day of competition with the U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team defeating Canada, 5-2, and the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team triumphing, 5-4, at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
Despite the outcomes today, the U.S. lost both series, finishing the Collegiate Select Series with a record of 1-0-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and the Under-18 Select Series at 1-0-0-2.
U.S. Collegiate Select Team 5, Canada 2
The U.S. initiated the scoring during a fast-paced first period. With 5:55 left in the opening frame, Maggie Scannell (Wynantskill, N.Y./University of Wisconsin) forced a turnover behind the net and passed to Chloe Boreen (Somerset, Wis./University of St. Thomas), who redirected a tip-in past Canada’s goalie, establishing a 1-0 advantage.
In the final moments of the first period, Canada took advantage of a power play when Claire Murdoch received a stretch pass and tucked a breakaway shot behind Ava McNaughton’s (Seven Fields, Pa./University of Wisconsin) outstretched pads, leveling the score at 1-1.
Cassie Hall (South Lyon, Mich./University of Wisconsin) put Team USA ahead 2-1 with 11:08 remaining in the second period, firing a shot into the top corner from the high slot just before the conclusion of a U.S. power play.
Later in the second, Canada had a 37-second 5-on-3 power play opportunity, but Team USA’s defense remained resolute, successfully killing off both extra-skater chances.
Boreen scored her second goal of the evening in the latter part of the second period, converting a backdoor pass that was lifted over the goalie’s glove during a power play.
Midway through the third period, Canada netted its second goal of the game on another breakaway, narrowing the gap to 3-2, but Laney Potter (Cranberry Township, Pa./University of Wisconsin) scored on a power play with 8:13 left, restoring a two-goal lead at 4-2.

Kelly Gorbatenko (Barrington, Ill./University of Wisconsin) sealed the victory for the U.S. with an empty-net goal, finalizing the score at 5-2.
McNaughton recorded 30 saves in goal. Canada outshot the U.S., 32-25. Team USA converted 3 of 5 power play opportunities and successfully killed 5 of 6 penalties.
U.S. Under-18 Select Team 5, Canada 4
Team USA started the game with a strong performance, scoring three goals within the first ten minutes of the opening period. The initial goal came 4:28 into the first when Alexis Ulrich (Prior Lake, Minn.) fired a shot from the point that Margaret Chudzinski (Westwood, Mass.) tapped in just after a power play ended.
Canada equalized during a subsequent power play with 13:28 remaining in the period, as Demi Lazarou scored from close range, making it 1-1.
The U.S. then scored two consecutive goals. Annabelle Lovell (Hingham, Mass.) tapped in a puck that was just on the goal line from the far post with 12:23 left in the period, followed by Frances Ames (Brookline, Mass.) who netted a power-play rebound from the doorstep just 2:15 later.
Adrianna Milani brought Canada back to within 3-2 with under eight minutes remaining in the first period, before Aubryn Monter (North Ridgeville, Ohio) scored Team USA’s fourth goal, the second on the power play, with 1:06 left in the first.

Amelia Sutch (Blaine, Minn.) scored on a rebound with 4:56 remaining in the second period, extending the lead to 5-2, before Milani netted her second goal of the game, making it 5-3 as the teams headed into the second intermission.
Avery Jones narrowed the score to 5-4 for Canada with just 11 seconds left in the game, but the U.S. managed to secure the win.
Cecilia Wielenberg (Downers Grove, Ill.) recorded 19 saves in goal. The U.S. outshot Canada, 32-23. Team USA was 3-7 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
