In under a month, Alex Eala avenged her earlier loss to one of the most promising young talents on the WTA Tour.

The Filipina tennis star maintained her remarkable performance at the BNP Paribas Open with an impressive 6-2, ret. victory over world number four Coco Gauff on Monday morning at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, moving on to the Round of 16.

This victory comes shortly after Gauff handed Eala a convincing defeat in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Both competitors faced challenges in the early stages as holding serve proved to be difficult. The initial three service games were exchanged through breaks, but Eala eventually established her rhythm in a challenging fourth game on Gauff’s serve. The 20-year-old Eala executed a precise finishing sequence from the baseline to achieve her second break of the set – a pivotal moment that shifted the momentum decisively in her favor.

Following that, Eala controlled the match with consistent depth and assertive returns, breaking Gauff in all four of the American’s service games in the first set. She surged to five consecutive games to clinch the set, while the multiple Grand Slam champion Gauff struggled to find her rhythm and recorded seven double faults.

As the match continued, physical issues began to impact Gauff, who displayed visible discomfort in her left arm. After Eala broke early in the second set to establish a 2-0 lead, the American ultimately opted to retire from the match.

Eala’s discipline from the baseline was crucial throughout the match. Gauff concluded with 26 unforced errors, while Eala made only 12, underscoring Eala’s ability to remain composed during extended rallies and take advantage of her opponent’s mistakes.

With this victory, Eala improves her record to 4-3 against top-10 opponents and secures her second win over a top-10 player this season. She now progresses to face 14th seed Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic in the Round of 16 as her breakthrough campaign in the desert continues.
