Italy clarifies celebration, refutes claims of "disrespect" towards Bosnia 1

Federico Dimarco has clarified Italy’s seemingly celebratory reaction after being drawn against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a World Cup playoff, asserting that there was no disrespect towards their upcoming opponents.

Italy secured a place in the World Cup qualifying playoff final with a 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland, then observed the conclusion of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s match against Wales, which determined their rivals.

As Bosnia triumphed in a penalty shootout in Cardiff, video footage showed Italy’s players appearing to celebrate the outcome.

“It was a spontaneous reaction,” Dimarco told AP. “I certainly did not show any disrespect towards Bosnia or the Bosnian people.”

Italy is set to face Bosnia on Tuesday, aiming to qualify for this summer’s World Cup after missing out on the last two tournaments.

Clement Turpin from France will officiate their match against Bosnia. He was also the referee during their defeat to North Macedonia, which cost them a spot at the 2022 World Cup.

The capacity of the 14,000-seat Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica will be reduced by 20% following FIFA’s sanction for discriminatory and racist behavior by Bosnia’s supporters.

“We anticipate a challenging atmosphere,” Dimarco stated. “However, if we can maintain the right mindset for the full 95 minutes, I believe we can achieve a positive result.”

Italy needs to manage former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko, who is now 40 but scored an equalizer against Wales last week. Dzeko also has experience in Serie A with Inter and Roma.

“Edin is an exceptional player and a wonderful person,” Dimarco remarked. “I saw him during the summer vacation, and I have kept a good relationship with him.”

Pio Esposito, who played a key role in their victory over Northern Ireland as a substitute, may start in the forward position for Italy instead of Mateo Retegui.

“He’s a remarkable young talent,” Dimarco said regarding his Inter teammate Esposito. “He is wise beyond his years and always gives his allβ€”both in games and during training. He just needs to be allowed to develop without excessive pressure.”

Matteo Politano, 32, added: “We all understand what is at stake. For me, and for several of the other veteran players, this might be our final opportunity.”
