Ireland's Sammie Szmodics discharged from hospital following clash with Czechia 1

Republic of Ireland forward Sammie Szmodics has been discharged from a hospital in Prague after being rendered unconscious during Thursday night’s World Cup play-off loss to Czechia.

The 24-year-old Ipswich striker, currently on loan at Derby, sustained the injury in a clash with defender Stepán Chaloupek just two minutes after being brought on as a substitute in extra time at the Fortuna Arena, prompting medical personnel to rush to his assistance.

Szmodics was taken off the pitch on a stretcher and transported directly to the hospital, where Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson later indicated he would remain overnight for monitoring.

A spokesperson for the Football Association of Ireland stated on Friday morning: “Sammie Szmodics was taken to the hospital yesterday after suffering a head injury during extra time of the playoff against Czechia.

“After undergoing additional tests and a period of observation, he has been safely released from the hospital and will continue his recovery under the supervision of the Republic of Ireland and Derby County medical teams.”

Szmodics, who Hallgrimsson confirmed would have participated in the penalty shoot-out that Ireland ultimately lost 4-3, took to social media to thank those who assisted him.
