Flick's remarks inspire Barcelona's second-half rout of Newcastle 1

BARCELONA — Hansi Flick’s halftime address inspired Barcelona’s second-half supremacy against Newcastle United, enabling them to secure a Champions League quarterfinal matchup with Atlético Madrid following a commanding 7-2 victory.

Barça held a 3-2 advantage at halftime after last week’s 1-1 draw in Newcastle, but netted four unanswered goals in the second half to dominate their Premier League rivals.

Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski each netted two goals, with Marc Bernal, Lamine Yamal, and Fermín López also contributing, while both of Newcastle’s goals were scored by Anthony Elanga.

“What we discussed at halftime, the players executed, and it’s always positive when players adhere to a strategy, how we want to implement the changes,” Flick stated in the post-match press conference.

“The first half was quite intense and challenging. We lost a lot of possession. For a team like Newcastle, with their pacey players, they executed excellent transitions. Defending was not straightforward.

“In the second half, we emphasized the need to control the game more effectively. We aimed to push them back and establish our style of play. I believe it worked well in the second half.

“It was encouraging to witness. The confidence displayed in the second half was also pleasing. We have a very young squad, and it’s wonderful to observe their development.”

When asked about Flick’s instructions during the break, Bernal remarked: “He advised us to manage their pressure more effectively. They kept advancing into our territory, and we needed to exploit those spaces to score. I think we accomplished that.”

Both teams contributed to an engaging first half. Raphinha and Bernal each gave Barça the lead twice, but Elanga, who had previously scored only once for Newcastle, equalized on both occasions.

However, the match shifted just before halftime when Yamal converted a penalty after Kieran Trippier fouled Raphinha.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe believed that moment was pivotal in the match.

“I don’t think we psychologically recovered from [that decision],” he commented. “In the second half, we lacked the same energy. When the game was effectively over, we didn’t respond well.

“The timing was particularly difficult for us to accept. Right at halftime, it should have been 2-2 with a positive feeling, right in the contest. Instead, it turned negative.”

Barça shifted into a higher gear in the second half after Fermín, receiving a superb pass from Raphinha, made it 4-2.

“It’s true that during the first half we made a couple of mistakes that led to their goals,” defender Gerard Martín told reporters. “We were somewhat insecure and lacking in rhythm.

“But in the second half, we recognized we were playing at home and needed to keep pushing. We had to enhance our ball control and rhythm. Ultimately, we were able to find the spaces and opportunities.”

Lewandowski then scored two quick goals, ending a three-match goal drought, becoming the oldest player to score twice in a Champions League match at 37 years old.

Flick expressed satisfaction at seeing the Polish forward find the net and hopes it will spark a resurgence in form as the LaLiga leaders continue to compete on multiple fronts.

“It hasn’t been an easy situation for our forwards, for Robert or Ferran [Torres], as they are always evaluated based on goals — which is typical for a No.9,” the German coach remarked.

“I am pleased for Lewy that he scored two goals today. In these matches, he’s exceptional. He’s one of the best players, one of the top strikers in the box.”

Both teams faced injury challenges. Howe indicated that Sandro Tonali is uncertain for Sunday’s derby against Sunderland, while Barça will conduct tests on Eric García and Joan García on Thursday.

Flick’s team will return to the pitch on Sunday when they face Rayo Vallecano at Spotify Camp Nou before the international break.
