Former Chelsea defender Ashley Cole expressed that he felt “discouraged” by the limited managerial prospects in England and appreciates Serie B club Cesena for the “massive leap of faith” in hiring him.

Cole was appointed as the head coach at Italian team Cesena last month, marking his first full-time managerial position. The 45-year-old had earlier served as an assistant manager at Everton, Birmingham City, and the England national team, but his background was not considered adequate for a head coach position at any English club.

“I was feeling somewhat discouraged by the absence of opportunities from certain clubs in England I approached,” Cole stated in an interview with BBC.

“They often mention the ‘you lack experience’ argument. And I understand their point, I agree — but how am I supposed to gain experience?

“That’s the challenge you face as a number two for six or seven years — you need to take a leap of faith, but a club must also take a leap of faith.

“I don’t believe there are many black English coaches working in Italy, so indeed, it is a significant leap of faith from them, and I am very proud to be here.

“It is a wonderful place to be and to begin. I’m pleased to be back. We aim to do something different — something a bit special.”

Cole lost his inaugural match in charge at Cesena in mid-March before securing his first managerial victory against Catanzaro the following week. His team drew and lost their next two matches.

They currently hold the last promotion playoff position in the standings with four matches remaining, but Cole emphasizes that his team is not yet prepared for the transition to the top division.

He discussed his desire to establish their own playing style and apply the knowledge he has gained from all the coaches he played under during his career.

“I am not going to be a Jose Mourinho — I don’t possess that level of stature or respect because I haven’t won anything. Carlo Ancelotti is composed and successful as both a player and manager — so I cannot emulate him. I can’t be a Rafa Benitez.

“I need to take elements from them, be myself, trust my process, and concentrate on Cesena. I aspire to work hard, and hopefully, one day, I can secure a trophy.”
