Max Verstappen contemplating retirement from Formula 1 after the 2026 season – reports

Max Verstappen is reportedly contemplating retirement from Formula 1 at the conclusion of the 2026 season, as per a well-informed Dutch publication.
De Telegraaf, a source typically reliable regarding Verstappen’s affairs, disclosed on Sunday that the four-time world champion is considering leaving the sport due to the contentious new regulations in F1.
This news follows a disappointing weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix, where Verstappen was eliminated in Q2 during qualifying and ultimately finished eighth, trailing Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in the race.
The publication indicates that there are “crucial weeks ahead,” alluding to the month-long hiatus from racing caused by the cancellation of events in the Middle East.
ESPN has contacted Red Bull for additional comments.
Verstappen has previously expressed that he would not hesitate to exit F1 if he no longer finds enjoyment in it.
The challenging start to 2026 seems to have intensified his sentiments. Verstappen has voiced his discontent with the new cars, comparing them to Mario Kart and describing them as “anti-racing,” and has also become increasingly dissatisfied with Red Bull’s lack of competitiveness.
After his Q2 exit on Saturday, he conveyed to the media that he was “beyond frustrated” with his current circumstances and struggled to articulate his feelings about the sport at this time.

He also noted that he needs to “figure some stuff out” during the upcoming break, but did not provide any further details.
Verstappen, who will turn 29 in September, ranks third on F1’s all-time race winners list with 71 victories, surpassed only by Lewis Hamilton (105) and Michael Schumacher (91).
This year, he is set to participate in the Nurburgring 24 Hours endurance sports car race, having previously competed at the iconic German circuit in two highly publicized events.
He has already confirmed his intention to race at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the future.
