George Russell expresses understanding if Max Verstappen decides to leave Formula 1.

George Russell suggests that Max Verstappen’s recent comments about potentially leaving Formula 1 are connected to Red Bull’s difficulties this season, but he acknowledges that he would comprehend if the four-time champion chose to exit the sport.
Following a challenging eighth-place result at last month’s Japanese Grand Prix, Verstappen indicated he was contemplating a departure from F1 at the season’s conclusion due to his dissatisfaction with the sport’s new regulations, which he has labeled as “anti-racing.”
This yearβs significant revision of F1’s power units has increased the focus on electric power, altering the racing dynamics and shifting the emphasis of qualifying laps from maximum speed to energy management.
Russell expressed that he enjoys competing against Verstappen in F1, but ultimately, the sport would persist without the Red Bull driver, who he believes has a distinct perspective after securing four world titles in his career.
“Formula 1 is larger than any individual driver, but losing Max would be unfortunate because we all appreciate racing against him,” Russell stated.
“The changes in regulations are simply part of Formula 1. I didn’t find driving the 2022 car enjoyable when it was porpoising, causing discomfort for everyone. The car was large and heavy, and navigating high-speed corners was not very pleasant.
“However, he did not share the same concerns because he was winning. The issues he currently faces differ from those of Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren, as we are at the front of the grid. This is entirely natural.
“You can understand and acknowledge the frustration. Yet, he has accomplished what most drivers aspire to, which is winning a championship. He has four titles.
“Ultimately, there comes a time in life when there may not be much left for him to achieve in Formula 1. He has checked all the boxes.
“Perhaps he can pursue records, but knowing him and other drivers who have reached similar heights, at some point, you want to engage in activities that bring you joy.”
In addition to his F1 responsibilities this year, Verstappen is also gearing up for a challenge at the Nurburgring 24 Hours in May and will take part in two ‘Qualifier’ races this weekend on the renowned Nordschleife circuit.

Russell shared that he would be eager to take on a similar challenge but is currently concentrating on pursuing his first F1 title.
“I can completely understand why racing at the Nordschleife brings him joy,” the Mercedes driver remarked. “I’ve completed hundreds of laps in the simulator, and I would relish the opportunity to race at the Nordschleife.
“However, my current objective is to become a Formula 1 world champion. If I had four titles to my name, I would likely be pursuing the same path. Thus, he is at a very different phase of his career.
“And I think you would understand if he chose to remain [in F1] or if he decided to leave.”
