2026 Formula 1 Vehicles: Mercedes W17 Conducts Initial Track Test at Silverstone

Mercedes’ latest Formula 1 vehicle has taken to the track for the first time at Silverstone, completing 200km of running during a filming day.
Drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli shared 67 laps of Silverstone’s 2.979km International Circuit in wet and chilly conditions, reaching the maximum distance allowed under F1 regulations for a filming day.
This track session followed the online unveiling of the W17 and its new design on Thursday morning.
The car, constructed in accordance with entirely new technical regulations for 2026, is scheduled to return to the track next week for a private test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
All 11 teams will have the opportunity for three days of running within a five-day timeframe (26-30 January) prior to two additional tests in Bahrain and the season opener in Australia on March 8.
Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin stated that Thursday’s shakedown proceeded as planned for Mercedes.
“We have had a productive first day of running with the W17 at Silverstone,” Shovlin remarked. “As with any shakedown, the emphasis is on confirming that everything functions safely and reliably.
“We managed to complete our designated mileage, with both George and Kimi experiencing the 2026 car on track for the first time. This reflects the dedication of everyone at Brackley and Brixworth.
“Our focus now shifts to Barcelona, where we aim to build on today’s running and enhance our understanding of the W17.”
Following a streak of eight consecutive constructors’ championships from 2014 to 2021, Mercedes did not achieve title success under the previous technical regulations, which were in effect from 2022 to 2025.
The team has already been identified as a frontrunner to fully leverage the capabilities of its new power unit under the 2026 regulations, which will introduce a threefold increase in electrical power output and a transition to advanced sustainable fuels.
Mercedes is also providing engines to the reigning champions McLaren, as well as Williams and Alpine.
