Washington Spirit secures first victory despite Rodman’s goal-scoring slump.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Gift Monday netted a goal just two minutes after coming on as a late substitute, leading the Washington Spirit to a 2-0 victory over Bay FC on Sunday.
This marked the Spirit’s first win of the NWSL season (1-1-3), which also included an own goal.
Trinity Rodman, still in search of her first goal this season, had a promising opportunity in the 25th minute, but her attempt at the near post was denied by Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz.
The U.S. international signed a record NWSL contract in January to remain with the Spirit despite overseas interest. Although she has yet to score, Rodman has started all five matches for the Spirit this season and has been a significant contributor to the team’s offensive efforts.
Silkowitz also saved another attempt from Hal Hershfelt in the 29th minute.
A concerning collision occurred between the Spirit’s Lucia Di Guglielmo and teammate Tara Rudd before halftime. Rudd continued in the match, while Di Guglielmo exited with a noticeable cut on her head, giving a thumbs up to supporters as she left the field.
The Spirit took a 1-0 lead due to an own goal when Silkowitz rushed out of her goal to confront two Spirit players, and her clearance attempt deflected off Brooklyn Courtnall.
Monday, a Nigerian international, was brought into the match in the 84th minute and scored in the 86th minute on a rebound after Silkowitz had blocked Rodman’s shot.
With this defeat, Bay’s record fell to 2-2-0.
