Virgil van Dijk supports Liverpool supporters’ protests against ticket prices: ‘Heart and soul’

Virgil van Dijk has stated that Liverpool supporters have a “right” to express their discontent regarding ticket price increases and has called on the club to seek a resolution, as the current circumstances “benefit no one.”
Liverpool recently revealed plans to increase ticket prices for the upcoming three seasons, which led to a strong backlash from fan groups, culminating in a matchday protest during Saturday’s match against Fulham, where a banner was displayed in the Anfield stand.
Following the match, Liverpool captain Van Dijk conveyed a clear message to the club concerning the issue.
“I believe the fans are the heart and soul of the club,” the defender remarked. “If they feel this way, then protesting is their rightful action. I hope they can reach an agreement with the club. These matters are beyond my role as captain.”
“However, I maintain that our fans embody the club. They always have — both before my time and after. It is crucial that these issues are addressed because they serve no one’s interests.”
In addition, Van Dijk expressed confidence that teenager Rio Ngumoha would rise to the occasion if given the opportunity to start for Liverpool against Paris Saint-Germain.
The 17-year-old netted the opening goal in an impressive performance as the Reds secured a vital 2-0 victory over Fulham in the Premier League.
This win provided relief to Arne Slot’s team after being outperformed by Manchester City and PSG in their last two matches.
They now face the challenging task of hosting the French team while trailing 2-0 on aggregate in their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.
Ngumoha’s emergence has given Liverpool a boost, and Van Dijk believes he could have a significant impact if called upon.
The Liverpool captain stated: “He would handle it well.”

“He’s a modest young man who puts in the effort and listens. He is constantly striving to improve. He has big aspirations.”
“It is up to him and those around him to ensure he maintains that mindset. I have no concerns that anything will change in that regard.”
“It is the manager’s responsibility to determine the lineup and strategy for Tuesday. Regardless of whether you start or not, everyone must feel included in something special. That is essential for us to overcome PSG.”
Ngumoha previously became Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer by scoring a dramatic late winner at Newcastle in August when he was just 16.
At 17 years and 225 days, he now holds the club record as the youngest Premier League goalscorer at Anfield, surpassing Raheem Sterling’s former record.
Van Dijk remarked: “He has taken the record from Raheem, which is a wonderful achievement for him and should inspire him even further. Such milestones should not be taken lightly, and he won’t. He must continue to push forward.”
Ngumoha set Liverpool on the path to victory when he deceived Timothy Castagne and curled the ball inside the far post after 36 minutes.
Mohamed Salah quickly added a second goal, and the hosts managed to maintain their lead, enhancing their chances of Champions League qualification for the next season despite a second-half resurgence from Fulham.
Van Dijk noted: “Clearly, we are in the final phase of the season, so we must secure victories, and that is what we accomplished.”
“Nothing more, nothing less. It was crucial.”
