Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool will remain grounded following victory over Galatasaray 1

Liverpool’s captain Virgil van Dijk emphasizes the importance of not becoming overly excited about their commanding Champions League display against Galatasaray, noting the challenge of maintaining such intensity consistently.

The Turkish team entered the round of 16 second leg with a 1-0 advantage but were overwhelmed by what could be considered the finest performance of the season from Arne Slot’s squad in terms of mentality and vigor.

This 4-0 victory at Anfield secured a quarterfinal matchup with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, who eliminated them in the previous season.

“There was a lot on the line, which was clear, so we needed to demonstrate how much we desired it,” Van Dijk stated.

“I believe we have played well at times, but not with the consistency we need, which has been frustrating for all of us and for the supporters as well.

“It is quite challenging, but that is the toughest aspect of life—achieving it every three or four days. If you can do that, there is a significant chance of success.

“That is what we aim for, what we experienced last year, and what we are striving to attain, but it requires several factors to align, and we must not get ahead of ourselves.

“We have delivered solid performances this season, yet we have struggled to build on them in subsequent matches.

“This was a physically and mentally taxing game, and it is up to us to ensure we are prepared for an early kickoff against Brighton.”

With away supporters restricted to around 200 VIPs, Anfield transformed into the vibrant atmosphere typically associated with European nights, and the team responded by moving past Sunday’s lackluster draw at home against Tottenham, addressing some of their critics.

That match had elicited rare boos from the home crowd, raising concerns about the team—and Slot in particular—losing the support of fans who have witnessed numerous disappointing performances.

“The fans can likely express that if we deliver that level of performance every week, there would be no issues, and we can also say if the fans bring that energy every three or four days, there would be no problems either. It is about collaborating,” Van Dijk added.

“This season, as players, we fully accept responsibility for many performances where we have not met expectations.

“However, I believe there is no value in discussing it at this moment after we have advanced to the last eight, as that is still a significant achievement.

“The only course of action is to keep progressing, strive for improvement, and each time we step onto the pitch, represent the badge in the best manner possible.”
