Tottenham’s Roberto De Zerbi developing ‘unique bond’ with Xavi Simons

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has expressed that he already shares a “special connection” with Xavi Simons.
The Spurs were on the verge of escaping the Premier League relegation zone on Saturday, only to allow a stoppage-time equalizer in a 2-2 draw at home against De Zerbi’s previous team, Brighton.
Midfielder Simons assisted Pedro Porro’s opening goal against the Seagulls and later hit the post before igniting celebrations by putting his team ahead again with a remarkable finish in the 77th minute.
Having played in a similar role during his career, De Zerbi believes he is well-equipped to maximize the potential of the Netherlands international.
“He’s fortunate to work with me — not because I’m exceptional, but because I was a No. 10,” De Zerbi stated in an interview with SpursPlay.
“What he perceives now, I understood 20 years ago. Thus, we share a special connection. I have a unique bond with all No. 10s I collaborate with.
“I have a fondness for a No. 10. A No. 10 must recognize that they need to score and provide assists, not merely play for the sake of aesthetics — goals and assists.”
Since taking over from Igor Tudor, De Zerbi has garnered one point from a possible six, having started his tenure with a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland.
Tottenham remains one point away from safety but could find themselves four points adrift in the relegation battle if 17th-placed West Ham secures a victory at Crystal Palace on Monday evening.

Spurs will face bottom-placed Wolves on Saturday, still in search of their first league victory of 2026.
Simons, whose stunning goal was equalized by Brighton substitute Georginio Rutter five minutes into stoppage time, has recorded two goals and five assists in 27 top-flight matches this season following his Β£52 million transfer from RB Leipzig last summer.
“He performed very well, a fantastic game,” De Zerbi remarked about the 22-year-old.
“I believe he can continue to improve, as a player like him requires confidence from the manager, and I am here to instill all the confidence he needs.”
