Thomas Tuchel will remain as England manager until Euro 2028 after signing a new contract, as confirmed by the Football Association on Thursday.

The 52-year-old initially entered into an 18-month agreement that extended to the conclusion of this summer’s World Cup, but discussions regarding an extension commenced after Tuchel expressed his desire to continue.

Previously, Tuchel had only managed at the club level, with tenures at Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. However, sources indicate that he has appreciated the pace of international football, particularly as it allows him to spend time with his family in Germany between matches.

Moreover, England has demonstrated potential on the field, winning all eight of their World Cup qualifiers under Tuchel without allowing a single goal.

Tuchel is scheduled to be in Brussels on Thursday for the UEFA Nations League group phase draw, and the confirmation of his extension will prevent uncomfortable inquiries regarding his role in the upcoming competition, which begins in the autumn.

His new contract will see him lead the team during a ‘home’ Euros in two years. The tournament will take place across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, with the semifinals and final hosted at Wembley.

“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England,” Tuchel stated. “It is well-known that I have enjoyed every moment working with my players and coaches, and I am eager to guide them to the World Cup.

“This is an incredible opportunity, and we will strive to make the country proud.”

Sources suggest that the FA was also eager to eliminate any uncertainty regarding Tuchel’s position ahead of this summer’s World Cup, which he has openly discussed the possibility of winning.

England will compete against Croatia, Ghana, and Panama in the group stage. Critics may contend that Tuchel’s performance can only be accurately evaluated at the finals, making a new deal seem premature. However, sources indicate that the FA wanted to ensure Tuchel was not caught up in what is expected to be a managerial shuffle this summer, with numerous elite coaches nearing the end of their contracts.

Just for the World Cup, Mauricio Pochettino (USMNT), Carlo Ancelotti (Brazil), and Didier Deschamps (France) will all be out of contract following the tournament.

In the Premier League, Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace), Marco Silva (Fulham), and Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth) all have contracts expiring, while Xabi Alonso, Zinedine Zidane, Enzo Maresca, and Joachim Low are among those currently without a position.

Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Tottenham are among the leading clubs seeking new permanent managers, but the FA has acted to secure Tuchel for the next two years.

“I am thrilled that Thomas has committed to stay with us through to the Euros in 2028,” FA CEO Mark Bullingham remarked. “He was the ideal candidate for the role when he joined us for the World Cup campaign, and he has only enhanced his reputation throughout the qualifiers.

“There is simply no better candidate available in world football. With his experience in high-stakes matches, knowledge, and enthusiasm, he provides the squad with the best opportunity for success—this summer and during the once-in-a-generation Euro being hosted here in two years.

“By securing [Tuchel] early for 2028, we have removed the potential distraction of contract negotiations surrounding the tournament.”
