Thibaut Courtois is expected to be out of action for approximately six weeks following a thigh injury sustained during Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Manchester City, sources informed ESPN.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper was substituted by Andriy Lunin for the second half of the Champions League round of 16 second leg, where two goals from Vinícius Júnior secured a 5-1 aggregate triumph for the Spanish team.

A statement released by Real Madrid on Thursday stated: “After examinations conducted today on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. His recovery will be closely monitored.”

This injury poses a significant setback for Real, who will be without their key goalkeeper for the Madrid derby against Atlético in LaLiga on Sunday, as well as both matches of their Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich.

If he remains out for the entire six weeks, Courtois will miss seven matches across all competitions.

With Real trailing Barcelona by four points at the top of LaLiga, Álvaro Arbeloa will be hopeful of having the Belgian back in his starting lineup for El Clásico at Camp Nou on May 10.

Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García also faced an injury concern during Wednesday night’s 7-2 win over Newcastle United.

However, despite the Spaniard needing to be substituted for Wojciech Szczesny, Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that medical assessments revealed no signs of injury, and García would be available for selection for Sunday’s match against Rayo Vallecano.
