Slot expresses relief despite Liverpool’s defeat to PSG

PARIS — Arne Slot stated that Liverpool still retains hope for a Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain, even as he acknowledged that his team was “ripped apart” by the European champions in a 2-0 defeat during the quarterfinal first leg in the French capital.
Goals from Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia ensure that PSG will head to Anfield for the second leg next Tuesday with a significant advantage, although Luis Enrique’s team could have concluded the match with a five or six goal margin due to the opportunities they created.

Slot utilized a 3-4-3 formation and opted to bench Mohamed Salah in an attempt to disrupt PSG, but this strategy did not succeed in containing the home side.
Nevertheless, despite the loss in the first leg, Slot believes that Liverpool can still turn the tie around and progress to the semifinals by winning the second leg at Anfield.
“If you consider the entire match, I think we are fortunate to have only lost 2-0,” Slot remarked. “It is beneficial for us that we are still in the tie; we can bring them to Anfield, and we are aware of how formidable Anfield can be for us.
“However, naturally, you feel that you could have performed better. We were in survival mode for significant stretches of the game, but perhaps that reflects the stage of the season we are currently in, as we are in survival mode.
“They [PSG] possess speed from every area of the pitch; wherever you look, you see remarkable pace.
“[Achraf] Hakimi and [Nuno] Mendes present an extraordinary attacking threat — their pace is beyond mere sprinting, and you must manage that.
“Typically, players like Jeremie [Frimpong] and Milos [Kerkez] are better suited to handle such challenges than traditional wingers, but during the moments we attempted to press them, we were torn apart.
“Every strategy has been attempted here, yet the outcome remains consistent, with Paris Saint-Germain overwhelming their opponents.
“They were the superior team. We did not surrender, and that is why we still have a chance. They kept us in the game by missing several clear opportunities.”
Liverpool must now rely on the Anfield atmosphere to inspire them to an improbable victory in the second leg, and Slot emphasized the crucial role of the club’s supporters next week.
“We hope to present a different performance at Anfield,” Slot stated. “If you aim to press aggressively, then the fans can be incredibly supportive, and the atmosphere can be very intense.
“It is evident that we will not employ the same tactics as we did tonight, but football has repeatedly demonstrated that anything is possible.
“In football, there are red cards, penalties, and we must not forget the impact Anfield can have.
“Our fans significantly influence our performance, and their support is essential, especially given that it was abundantly clear today that we need our fans more than ever.”
