Simeone pays tribute to Griezmann in heartfelt press conference ahead of Atleti departure.

An emotional Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone utilized the start of Tuesday’s press conference prior to his team’s Champions League match against Barcelona to convey his appreciation and respect for Antoine Griezmann, who is set to play his final games with Atleti before transferring to Orlando City SC at the conclusion of the season.
Seated next to the French forward, Simeone requested a moment to express his admiration for Griezmann before the media session commenced.
“I wanted to take this chance to speak, not only from a coach’s viewpoint but also as an Atlético supporter,” the Argentine manager began, catching Griezmann by surprise.
“I want to express my gratitude for your dedication and humility. You are an exemplary individual in a society where young people require role models like you. Thank you for everything you have contributed, are contributing, and will continue to contribute.
“Thank you for your dedication, for understanding the distinction between our friendship and the professional dynamic between a coach and a player. I see you primarily as a player, and only afterward as a friend. We have eight league matches left, one Cup match, and — if all goes well — five more matches in the Champions League.
Simeone then added humorously: “I encourage you to keep enjoying yourself. I care about you a lot. But if you don’t run tomorrow, you’re coming off!”
Clearly touched — and after receiving a warm gesture from Griezmann — Simeone smiled as Griezmann expressed his surprise at the manager’s remarks and promised to reciprocate the gratitude when they next gather with their families.
Later, Simeone was inquired whether Griezmann, who holds the record as Atlético Madrid’s all-time leading scorer with 211 goals across all competitions, is the finest player he has ever coached.
“I am thankful to have had such a transformative player,” Simeone stated. “He came in playing on the wing and faced a challenging three months trying to find his place. I informed him that I envisioned him in a more central role — one that demanded exceptional mental energy. Since then, he has frequently ended the season as our top scorer. Yes, he is indeed one of the best players I have ever coached.”
Regarding his future in MLS, Griezmann mentioned that he is currently focused on the upcoming match against his former club, Barcelona, rather than contemplating what lies ahead in Orlando at the end of the season.
“I’ve been working and seeking to fulfill what ‘Cholo’ [Simeone] requires from me,” Griezmann stated. “At this moment, it’s not the appropriate time to discuss Orlando and my plans there.
“Tomorrow, we are playing in the quarterfinals, which is something extraordinary. A lot of high-level football. I have a clear mindset to approach it, and I want to assist him as much as I can.”
