Roy Hodgson: Former England manager returns to football at 78 after accepting position with Bristol City 1

Former England manager Roy Hodgson has returned to football at the age of 78, having been appointed as the interim head coach of Bristol City.

A statement from the club confirmed that Hodgson will lead the team until the conclusion of the season following the dismissal of Gerhard Struber.

Hodgson has not been involved in management since February 2024, when he departed from Crystal Palace.

During his tenure as England manager, he directed two European Championships and the 2014 World Cup.

His extensive coaching career also includes positions at Liverpool, Fulham, and Inter Milan.

He returns to the club he managed for four months in 1982, where he achieved three victories out of 21 matches.

Hodgson’s initial challenge as Bristol City manager will be an away match against Charlton Athletic on April 3, nearly 44 years after his last game in charge.

“I have had excellent discussions with the Board and I am truly eager for the chance to assist until the season concludes,” Hodgson stated.

“We will begin immediately and aim for a positive performance on Good Friday.”

Bristol City currently sits 16th in the Championship, having not secured a victory in England’s second tier since February 24.

The managerial shift follows a disappointing stretch of results since mid-February, which has diminished their hopes of reaching the playoff spots, leaving them 12 points behind sixth place.

Nevertheless, Hodgson and Bristol City maintain an 11-point buffer from the relegation zone, with seven matches left in the season.
