Real Madrid end coaching contract with Xabi Alonso by ‘mutual agreement’

Real Madrid on Monday announced that Xabi Alonso would no longer coach the club “by mutual agreement.”
“Real Madrid C.F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end Alonso’s tenure as head coach of the first team.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Real Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire coaching staff for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”
The decision comes after a poor run of form for the Spanish giants, including a loss to Barcelona this weekend in the Spanish Supercopa.
ESPN sources had reported that club executives first met to discuss his future after Real Madrid were beaten 2-0 at home to Celta Vigo on Dec. 7.
Alonso, 44, began his duties in June, replacing the outgoing Carlo Ancelotti on a three-year deal.
He led Madrid to the semifinals of the 2025 Club World Cup, his first assignment. Alonso made a fast start to LaLiga, winning their first six league matches, earning him La Liga’s Manager of the Month award for August.
He moved to the Spanish capital after a three-year spell with Bayer Leverkusen, in which saw them win their first Bundesliga title in 2024 without defeat — a first in German football.
Alonso had previously played for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, where he won La Liga and the Champions League in 2014.
The club are yet to announce the Spaniard’s replacement.
