MANCHESTER — Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has downplayed speculation regarding a disagreement with former teammate Paul Scholes following a controversial social media comment after the 2-1 loss to Newcastle.

Scholes later clarified that he “in no way intended to be offensive” after he remarked post-match at St James’ Park that “Michael has definitely got something special about him…cos United have been c*** last four games.”

In reaction to the initial post—which was later removed—another ex-United player, Patrice Evra, expressed his hope that Scholes “was hacked.”

After facing backlash, Scholes disclosed that he reached out to Carrick to address the matter.

When asked about their discussion, Carrick stated that the situation had already been put behind them.

“It was nothing really, there’s nothing to elaborate on,” Carrick mentioned at a press conference on Friday.

“I think that is just where we are with social media and captions and quotes. They can be interpreted in various ways.

“So just remain calm about it and grasp the true meaning of things. Look, there are diverse opinions out there, and that’s acceptable; people can hold different views.

“Things can be exaggerated from one extreme to another. It is what it is. I am not concerned about it and do not make a fuss over it either.”

Carrick is preparing his squad for Aston Villa’s visit to Old Trafford on Sunday.

He is expected to be without defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez once more, but Mason Mount may return after rejoining training.

“Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic,” Carrick stated.

“He’s a key player for us, Mason, and having him back and involved is a positive development for us.

“He is not at full fitness yet, as he has only trained for a very limited time, but he is back, and that’s beneficial for us, so we’ll see if he is included on Sunday, but it’s a significant step for him, and we are pleased with that. That’s all regarding players returning for now.”
