MANCHESTER, England — Moments after scoring to give Manchester United the lead against Aston Villa on Sunday, Matheus Cunha turned and gestured towards Bruno Fernandes.

It was Fernandes’ pass that penetrated the Villa defense, setting up Cunha for a relatively straightforward chance. Cunha’s acknowledgment highlighted Fernandes’ composed quality during a match that often felt chaotic and hurried.

More significantly, it underscored that Fernandes — at 31 years old — continues to be United’s key player.

Indeed, it was Fernandes’ corner kick that led to Casemiro’s header for the opening goal as United secured a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford, further solidifying their position in the top four and keeping their Champions League qualification hopes alive.

With two assists, Fernandes raised his tally to 16 in the Premier League this season, surpassing David Beckham’s United record of 15 set 26 years ago. He now requires four more to equal the 20 achieved by Thierry Henry in 2002-03 and Kevin De Bruyne in 2019-20, which would match the Premier League record.

With eight matches remaining, such a milestone is within reach.

“He’s been doing it for a long time now,” Carrick remarked regarding Fernandes’ contributions. “In crucial moments, whether he’s scoring or assisting, he’s usually involved. There’s not much more to add that I haven’t already said about Bruno, but I thought he performed very well.”

Fernandes had the opportunity to join Al-Hilal last summer but opted to decline a lucrative offer to remain in Manchester.

In an interview with Portuguese media in December, he admitted that his future remains uncertain. It is likely that among the many issues Manchester United needs to address this summer, retaining Fernandes is a priority.

With a £57-million release clause in his contract, part of that decision rests with Fernandes. He would be more inclined to stay if Champions League football is available, and he is certainly playing a significant role in that outcome.

His goals and assists this season have contributed to United earning 25 points. Only Robin van Persie (38 points in 2012-13) and Eric Cantona (26 points in 1993-94) have a better record. Whether it’s Beckham, Van Persie, or Cantona, Fernandes has reached a similar level among United legends.

“Regarding the club and its future, it’s challenging for me to get involved,” Carrick stated when asked about Fernandes’ future. “Bruno is not someone we want to lose. Beyond that, it’s difficult for me to elaborate further. He’s vital for us and not someone we wish to part with.”

“He’s crucial for us. He’s playing in areas where we need to locate him and provide him with as much support as possible. He has had several significant moments recently.”

Regardless of whether Fernandes stays or departs, United is facing a midfield overhaul this summer.

Casemiro has already expressed his desire to leave, although after his goal, the home supporters in the Stretford End began chanting “one more year, one more Casemiro” as he pointed to his head and the badge on his shirt.

Carrick does not anticipate the Brazilian reversing his decision, placing the responsibility on the recruitment team to find a player — or possibly two — who can fill his role. Casemiro’s goal was his seventh of the season, marking his best single-season total since scoring six for Real Madrid in 2020-21, and his sixth from set-pieces, two more than any other player in the league.

Whoever is brought in will face a challenging task.

“When a decision is made, it simplifies things a bit, and everyone understands the situation,” Carrick noted. “The impact he has had has been tremendous, his influence within the team, and his crucial moments and goals.”

“He’s a significant player for us and a key figure in the dressing room. It’s never about replacing them exactly. You can explore different avenues, assessing what balance the squad requires. Case has accomplished some really commendable things since I’ve been here, and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with him.”

The decision on whether to appoint Carrick on a permanent basis, along with the need for a Casemiro replacement, means United is facing a critical summer for multiple reasons.

With so much at stake, club executives, including CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, would prefer to avoid the challenge of finding someone to replicate Fernandes’ contributions.

It was yet another match where he demonstrated his importance, providing two assists to influence the game significantly.

He remains United’s key player and is spearheading the pursuit of Champions League qualification.
