Manchester United in favorable position regarding new agreement for Kobbie Mainoo 1

Michael Carrick stated that negotiations to secure Kobbie Mainoo’s long-term future are “getting closer” — but acknowledged that achieving Champions League qualification will aid in convincing players to commit to Manchester United.

Following a period of uncertainty under former manager Ruben Amorim, academy product Mainoo has thrived under Carrick’s leadership as head coach and appears to be a key player for the Red Devils once again.

Mainoo’s existing contract extends until 2027, with an option for an additional year, but reports suggest the club has approved a new five-year agreement for the England international.

With Harry Maguire recently signing an extension, Mainoo may soon follow suit, and Carrick is hopeful that negotiations are progressing positively.

“We’d like to think so and it’s getting closer, so we’re positive with that,” Mainoo remarked. “We’re calm about it, but we’re optimistic, and time will reveal how it unfolds. Currently, we are in a favorable position.”

United can take a significant step toward securing their place in the elite European competition when they face rivals Leeds United on Monday night — an accomplishment that would be a notable achievement for Carrick.

A victory on Monday would solidify their position in third place, bringing their season total to 58 points — three ahead of Aston Villa in fourth.

In addition to enhancing his coaching credentials — and improving his chances of securing the role permanently — it would also strengthen the club’s ability to attract and retain top talent.

“I think the Champions League brings numerous positive aspects. It’s where we aspire to be, and there’s no denying that,” he stated.

“That has implications for various factors…players remaining, if that is the case; if it’s about new signings, it’s financially [significant] for all sorts of different reasons. It’s where we want to be, and we need to adapt to being there more frequently.”

Carrick’s predecessor, Ruben Amorim, mentioned last May the need for two distinct transfer strategies based on whether they secured Champions League football — a challenge they did not overcome after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

The 44-year-old was not as definitive as his predecessor while looking ahead but recognized the significance of a top-five finish for the efforts of director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada.

“There’s clearly work being done in planning for the summer. There must be,” he noted. “However, regarding two plans, I won’t go into too much detail. It’s evident to everyone that finishing in certain league positions financially makes a substantial difference if you don’t.”

“There is certainly ongoing work regarding what can be done to advance in improving the squad and maximizing what we have.”
