Manchester United encounters a challenge regarding Andre Onana as goalkeeper’s salary is expected to rise – sources

Manchester United are confronted with a challenge regarding the future of Andre Onana, sources have informed ESPN, as the goalkeeper’s salary is poised to increase if they secure European qualification.
Onana moved to Turkish club Trabzonspor on a season-long loan in September.
However, with no obligation or option for a permanent transfer, the Cameroon international is expected to return to Old Trafford this summer.
The arrangement with Trabzonspor was made possible, in part, by a notable decrease in Onana’s wages at United following their failure to qualify for European competition for the 2025-26 season.
Yet, with Michael Carrick’s team currently third in the Premier League standings and on track to qualify for the Champions League, Onana’s pay is set to revert to its previous amount.
Sources have indicated to ESPN that there are worries at United that this increase will complicate efforts to attract interest in the 29-year-old during the summer.
This situation leaves the club with the potential need to cover part of Onana’s salary if they wish to pursue another transferβeither permanently or on loan.
Onana still has two years remaining on the contract he signed upon joining from Inter Milan under former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023.
Sources close to Onana have shared with ESPN that he prefers to return to the United squad for pre-season training and compete for his position.
Onana’s representatives anticipate discussions with the club before the end of May.
Meanwhile, United have been pleased with the performance of Senne Lammens since his arrival from Royal Antwerp and expect the Belgian to remain as the first-choice goalkeeper next season.
Sources have informed ESPN that the club may seek to acquire another goalkeeper this summer to replace No.2 Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir attracted interest from Besiktas in January and communicated to the club his desire to move to enhance his chances of playing for Turkey at the World Cup.
United opted not to weaken the squad in the middle of the season, but further interest in Bayindir is anticipated at the conclusion of the current campaign.
Third-choice Tom Heaton, 39, signed a one-year extension last summer and will be out of contract in June.
