Man City's Donnarumma: Vinícius 'ought to aim for universal admiration' 1

Gianluigi Donnarumma has expressed confusion over Vinícius Júnior’s decision to celebrate in front of Manchester City supporters, stating that a player of his caliber “should be appreciated by all.”

The Brazilian netted twice as Real Madrid achieved a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, completing a 5-1 aggregate triumph to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.

His penalty opener was marked by a mock-crying gesture, referencing a banner displayed by City fans during Real’s February visit that read ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out.’

This was a jab at Vinícius’ perceived discontent over losing to Rodri for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

However, it was the celebration following his stoppage-time second goal that appeared to annoy Donnarumma, as the City goalkeeper approached Vinícius while he stood in front of home fans, pointing to the name on his jersey.

When asked about the incident afterward, Donnarumma remarked: “He’s a champion and should be appreciated by everyone. I conveyed that to him.”

“He has performed excellently in two matches, but I believe someone of his stature should be embraced by all. He ought to strive to earn everyone’s admiration because he is a champion.”

City played the majority of the match with 10 men after captain Bernardo Silva was dismissed for handling a Vinícius shot.

Erling Haaland found the net as City registered 22 shots, but a comeback proved unattainable.

City must now regroup for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.

Donnarumma, on the other hand, has Italy’s World Cup qualification playoffs to navigate.

He stated: “I believe the sending-off was pivotal, but football is unpredictable, often defined by incidents, particularly in the Champions League.

“I take pride in my teammates; we played exceptionally well, and with 11 against 11, the outcome would have been different.

“The disappointment is significant, but we need to recover because we have the Carabao Cup to contend for on Sunday.

“There’s also the national team and the imperative to return Italy to the World Cup.”
