Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai: Contract renewal 'beyond my control' 1

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has expressed his desire to prolong his tenure at the club but noted that the decision is “not in [his] hands”.

Szoboszlai’s existing contract is set to run until 2028, yet Liverpool initiated discussions regarding a possible new agreement for the 25-year-old earlier this season. Sources informed ESPN that Liverpool sees Szoboszlai as a potential future captain and is keen to reward his outstanding performance this season.

When asked about any advancements in the negotiations, Szoboszlai replied: “Nothing yet, to be honest. Nothing, from now on … it is not in my hands. It works this way. There is no progression but if the right offer comes then let’s see.”

“Let’s see what happens, hopefully everyone will be satisfied at the end. Of course [I want to stay]. I enjoy the city, I enjoy the club, I enjoy playing with these teammates, I love Anfield, I love the supporters, let’s see what the future brings.”

“It is not up to me. I would love to [stay]. We will see.”

Szoboszlai — who transferred to the club from RB Leipzig in 2023 — has been among Liverpool’s top performers this season, contributing eight goals and seven assists across all competitions.

The Hungary international was asked to step in at right-back during Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday due to injuries affecting Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong; however, he emphasized that he is not a long-term answer to the club’s defensive issues.

“Not long-term, not even medium-term to be honest in my head,” he stated. “As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a midfielder and hopefully our right-back will return from injury, allowing me to move back to the center. But if the team requires me, or the coach needs me there, I will play and strive to give my best; however, Wata [Endo] is ready to play, and Curtis [Jones] is also prepared to play there, so we have several options now.”

Szoboszlai added: “I am the type of person who believes it is never enough for me; I can always improve, so there is no limit to my ambitions. I would like to score as many goals as possible, provide as many assists as I can, and win as many trophies as I can. That’s my goal. That’s how I was raised, and that’s how I intend to continue.”
