Liverpool’s Arne Slot: ‘Unique’ Rio Ngumoha netted a goal reminiscent of Salah in victory over Fulham

Liverpool's Arne Slot: 'Unique' Rio Ngumoha netted a goal reminiscent of Salah in victory over Fulham 1

Arne Slot likened Rio Ngumoha to Mohamed Salah after the 17-year-old helped Liverpool secure a 2-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.

Ngumoha initiated the scoring with an impressive shot before veteran Salah clinched three essential Premier League points at Anfield.

This marked Ngumoha’s first goal since a dramatic late winner at Newcastle in August and his inaugural goal in front of the home supporters.

Liverpool manager Slot remarked: “He’s not just the long-term future but also the immediate future.

“I mentioned a month or two ago that his playing time would increase as he has been getting stronger and stronger.

“He has demonstrated that it wasn’t merely a nice trick; there has been more and more end product to his play, along with increased power, which is necessary when facing the best defenders in the world.

“I don’t believe anyone is surprised he scored his first [Anfield] goal. He possesses a unique quality that is rare in football today, excelling in one-on-one situations.

“That’s exactly what he did when he netted his goal, freeing the ball by twisting and turning before finishing like Mo Salah.

“It’s gratifying to see him execute what we know makes him exceptional.”

Liverpool’s win provided Slot with some relief from the mounting pressure that has escalated during a disappointing season, particularly following significant defeats to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain in the past week.

Slot now faces the decision of whether to start Ngumoha in Tuesday’s challenging Champions League rematch against PSG at Anfield, where the Reds will seek to overturn a 2-0 deficit.

The Dutchman stated: “I believe he is prepared. The question is whether he can perform at this level just two days later. Yes.

“It’s not like at the start of the season when he was a young player gaining first-team experience. Now he is someone I can select for any match, including Tuesday.”

However, Slot noted that midfielder Curtis Jones was uncertain after leaving the match against Fulham due to a groin injury.

Ngumoha’s strike in the 36th minute, followed by Salah’s 256th goal for the club four minutes later, rewarded Liverpool for a commanding first half.

Fulham regrouped after halftime but failed to score, preventing a tense finish.

The visitors’ manager Marco Silva commented: “The game was decided in five minutes, and our approach was not aggressive enough both on and off the ball.

“We allowed Liverpool to build their attacks too easily. That was why they had the opportunities and maintained control of the match.

“The second half was entirely different. We created many more chances, but we were not clinical enough; with a goal, we could have created a different scenario.”
