Leicester City faces setback as appeal against points deduction is rejected. 1

Championship relegation battlers Leicester City have been unsuccessful in their appeal against a six-point penalty imposed for violating spending regulations.

Leicester, who experienced relegation from the Premier League at the conclusion of both the 2022-23 and 2024-25 campaigns, contested an independent commission’s ruling that recommended the sanction for infractions committed under the English Football League’s (EFL) profit and sustainability guidelines for the three-year span leading up to 2024.

A statement from the Premier League indicated: “An independent commission’s ruling to recommend a six-point deduction for Leicester City Football Club this season has been upheld by an independent appeal board.”

“The commission determined that the club had violated the EFL’s profit and sustainability regulations for the period concluding with the 2023/24 season. The club appealed this ruling on several grounds, including the authority of the commission to suggest the points deduction, as well as the severity of the penalty. These arguments were rejected by the appeal board.”

“The appeal board also dismissed a challenge from the Premier League, which was confined to the commission’s decision not to escalate the penalty on the club due to its violation of the League’s rules concerning the late submission of its annual accounts.”

Leicester, who were crowned Premier League champions in 2016, currently sit in 22nd position in the second-tier Championship, just one point from safety with five matches left to play, although the team directly above them, Portsmouth, has a game in hand.

“With the matter now concluded and five matches remaining in the season, everyone at the club is entirely focused on the upcoming games and on determining the outcome of our season through our performances on the field,” Leicester stated.
