The reigning NWSL champions, Gotham FC, revealed the acquisition of Norwegian midfielder Guro Reiten on Thursday, marking a significant addition just two days prior to the team’s inaugural match of the 2026 NWSL season.

Reiten will join Gotham on loan until July, coinciding with the expiration of her contract with Chelsea, the six-time defending English champions. She has already entered into a pre-contract agreement with Gotham FC that will extend through the 2029 NWSL season.

“Guro is a player of outstanding quality who has consistently excelled at the highest levels of the sport,” stated Gotham FC general manager Yael Averbuch West.

“Her experience in competing for significant trophies with Chelsea and her influence on the Norwegian national team will provide essential leadership and attacking ingenuity to our roster. We are thrilled to have her join Gotham.”

This sudden transfer occurs while Chelsea is positioned third in England’s Women’s Super League, trailing Manchester City by nine points. Reiten, known for her creative attacking style, has experienced a reduction in playing time this season.

She has a longstanding reputation as a skilled and inventive player, having been recognized on the team of the year twice in England and earning accolades externally, including a spot in ESPN FC’s 50 best women’s players of 2024.

Reiten has netted 21 goals in 108 appearances for Norway and has participated in the last two World Cups.

“I am truly excited to join Gotham FC and thankful for the chance to be part of this club,” Reiten expressed in a statement. “Gotham has created something remarkable over the past few years, and there is evident ambition here.

“I am eager to work hard, learn, and contribute in every way I can to help the team thrive.”

During her time at Chelsea, Reiten recorded 59 goals and 44 assists in 207 appearances across all competitions. She played a key role in Chelsea’s success, helping the team secure six league titles, four FA Cups, and three League Cups while taking on various attacking positions.

Additionally, she contributed to Chelsea’s journey to the 2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League final, where they were defeated by Barcelona.

Reiten joined Chelsea in 2019 following a distinguished domestic career.

Gotham will commence their NWSL title defense on Saturday against the expansion club Boston Legacy FC (12:30 p.m. ET, ABC/Disney+/ESPN App).
