ACCRA, Ghana — Otto Addo has been released from his position as head coach of the Ghana national soccer team, just 72 days prior to their opening match in the World Cup.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has mutually agreed to terminate the contract of the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately,” the organization stated in a release on its website Monday.

No additional information was provided regarding a successor for Addo or the rationale behind the decision.

This dismissal followed a 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart on Monday. Ghana also suffered a 5-1 loss in Austria the previous Friday and has now lost four consecutive friendly matches.

Addo was in his second tenure as coach of the team after Borussia Dortmund permitted him to leave his position in talent development at the conclusion of the season in March 2024. He previously served as Ghana’s interim coach for a significant portion of 2022, including during the World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana secured a victory against South Korea but was ultimately eliminated in the group stage.

Throughout his playing career, Addo, who was born in Hamburg, Germany, won the Bundesliga with Dortmund and represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup.

Ghana, which has qualified for the World Cup for the fifth time, is placed in Group L alongside Croatia, England, and Panama. The team is set to play its first match on June 17 against Panama in Toronto.
