Dominik Szoboszlai has expressed regret to Liverpool fans for seemingly confronting them following the team’s 4-0 loss to Manchester City last weekend, labeling the situation as a “misunderstanding.”

After Liverpool’s elimination from the FA Cup by City, Szoboszlai approached the away section at the Etihad, appearing to call for increased support as several fans departed the stadium early. The Hungary international has faced criticism from some for his actions, but he has maintained that his response stemmed from frustration after yet another disappointing outcome.

“To clarify, it may have been a misunderstanding between myself and the fans,” Szoboszlai stated prior to Liverpool’s Champions League quarterfinal match against Paris Saint-Germain. “I did not intend it negatively. Clearly, I understand the significance of the fans to this club and what this club represents to the fans as well.

“As players, we recognize that we strive for them just as much as we do for ourselves. If it was a misunderstanding, I apologize, but they should also know that I share their feelings. I feel exactly the same as they do. I want to emphasize that I stand with them, and we are united. I hope they are with us too.

“We are going to give our all [on Tuesday]. We will put forth our best effort from the first minute until hopefully the 90th, and if it extends to 120 or 125, we will be ready. I believe I can speak for all the players; we desire this intensely, we work hard for it, and anything can happen in a single match at Anfield.”

Liverpool faces a significant challenge to advance to the semifinals of this season’s tournament, having lost 2-0 in the first leg at the Parc des Princes. However, head coach Arne Slot is optimistic that his team possesses the quality to achieve something remarkable when they welcome Luis Enrique’s side to Anfield.

“We have demonstrated numerous times this season in crucial matches that we can deliver outstanding performances. I am fully aware that we have also shown a different side, but many of our games have been very strong, particularly in significant encounters,” he remarked.

“In the 49 home matches we have played [under my management], we have managed to score two goals or more on 36 occasions. While I acknowledge that we have not faced Paris Saint-Germain in all these 49 games, the Premier League and Champions League opponents we encountered were quite formidable.

“So yes, there is a belief that we can achieve something special tomorrow, but we must be exceptionally special to do so. We are up against the champions of Europe, which makes the challenge more daunting but not unfeasible.”
