Cristian Romero has avoided discussions regarding a summer transfer and emphasized that his primary focus is on assisting Tottenham in escaping relegation difficulties in the Premier League.

Romero made his return after concussion protocols to aid Spurs in securing a morale-boosting 3-2 victory over Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, although it did not avert their elimination from the Champions League in the round of 16.

Atlético manager Diego Simeone commended long-term transfer target Romero on Tuesday, but Tottenham’s captain declined to engage with the subject during a mixed zone interview with Spanish media, instead reiterating his commitment to enhancing the club’s Premier League performance.

“The reality is that I’m concentrating on our current situation,” Romero stated.

“I hold a great deal of respect and affection for the club, and I aim to conclude the season in the best manner possible.

“We will see what happens later, but the priority now is to regain energy to support Spurs.”

Romero’s comments echoed a similar sentiment expressed earlier this week when Micky van de Ven dismissed “nonsense” claims that Tottenham players lack concern for the survival struggle, and Pedro Porro also minimized speculation regarding a summer transfer back to Spain.

Spurs delivered one of their strongest performances of a challenging season against Atlético, ending an eight-match winless streak and securing under-pressure manager Igor Tudor his first victory in charge.

Tudor seemed on the verge of dismissal following a 5-2 defeat in Madrid, but a determined performance in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool and their European success has bolstered confidence ahead of Sunday’s crucial match against relegation rivals Nottingham Forest.

Porro remarked: “This match was also beneficial for building some confidence despite the elimination.

“To be honest, we’ve had some poor performances in the Premier League, but the last match against Liverpool, we also managed to draw, so we’re starting to regain some positive feelings, and that’s the overall impression we are left with.”

“At this moment, I’m not considering [returning to Spain]. The truth is I’m very happy here with my club.

“I’m making an effort, and all my teammates are striving to help [us] escape this situation. It’s challenging; it’s not easy because no one wants to be in this position at this stage, battling like this for what we’re fighting for, but the most crucial aspect is that the team is fighting, and we achieved a victory.

“It’s a bittersweet feeling, but it instills confidence for what will be like a final on Sunday.”
