Chelsea's Sonia Bompastor following victory over Aston Villa: 'Defensive performance lacking' 1

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor expressed disappointment regarding her team’s defensive performance in their thrilling 4-3 victory over Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

During the opening 35 minutes, six goals were scored in a back-and-forth contest, with Villa initially taking the lead through Chasity Grant. The home side responded effectively, netting three times within seven minutes to establish a 3-1 advantage, only to be equalized by a double from Kirsty Hanson.

The Blues pressed intensely for a decisive goal in the second half, and their efforts were rewarded in the 82nd minute when Sjoeke NΓΌsken completed a well-executed move from just inside the penalty area.

This match marked the second consecutive game in which Chelsea conceded three goals, following their 3-1 loss to Arsenal last week in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal.

Last season, Barcelona was the only team to score three goals against Chelsea (achieving this in both legs of their Champions League semifinal). However, this year, Villa became the third team to score three or more goals against the Blues across all competitions.

“Winning this game was the most crucial aspect for us. In terms of performance, Villa really challenged us. They scored first, and I believe we responded excellently, coming back from 1-0 down to score three goals in the first half,” Bompastor stated after the match to Sky Sports.

“To be honest, it is unacceptable for us to concede three goals. Villa had only three shots on target and scored three in the first half, so we must improve defensively, but ultimately we managed to secure the win.”

Failing to earn three points would have negatively impacted Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for Europe, and this victory elevates them to second place with three matches remaining.

The competition for Champions League qualification will be intense, culminating in Chelsea’s match against Manchester United on the final day of the season. Marc Skinner’s team is currently two points behind the Blues.

“The winning goal was significant for us. You could sense the relief,” Bompastor remarked.

“At this moment, the reality is that we are competing for Champions League positions, and this victory is immensely important for us.”
