Chelsea's Liam Rosenior: Defeat to Everton 'most disheartening to date' 1

Chelsea’s head coach Liam Rosenior expressed his disappointment following yet another defeat, describing the 3-0 loss to Everton as “the most disappointing evening so far.”

The visitors were outmatched and outmaneuvered in a humbling encounter as Hill Dickinson Stadium witnessed its finest performance in its brief history.

Chelsea has suffered four losses in a span of 10 days, which included an 8-2 aggregate defeat to Champions League titleholders Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Rosenior searching for minor positives after Manchester United and Liverpool both dropped points in the battle for a top-four finish.

“It’s a disappointing time for the club right now regarding the manner in which we lost in the Champions League and the way we’ve lost the last two matches,” stated Rosenior, who welcomed the upcoming international break.

“My role, it hurts. No matter your position, it is painful to lose football matches.

“Yes, the most disappointing evening so far in terms of the aspects we’ve discussed, not conceding goals unnecessarily and ensuring we remain competitive, gaining control of the match.

“That wasn’t present, and it evolved into a very challenging evening where the result and performance fell far short of our expectations.

“In terms of progressing, we’re just one point away from the Champions League spot. We must continue to work in this manner.”

After achieving their first consecutive home league victories of the season, thanks to two goals from Beto and a stunning strike from Iliman Ndiaye, Everton manager David Moyes is beginning to envision European football.

With his team only three points behind Liverpool in fifth place, which is likely to secure Champions League qualification for next season, the Scot could hardly fathom the possibility of joining Europe’s elite.

“I’d love to say it was [a possibility] as I’m trying to adopt a more positive outlook than I usually would, but for Everton to even be in contention for Europe is remarkable, whether it be the Conference League or Champions League,” he remarked.

“We were here last year just starting to distance ourselves from relegation and still had significant debts to settle, new ownership, and 10 or 12 players out of contract, so for us to be in the position we are now is fantastic.

“I can envision, if we could potentially achieve it, what it would mean for the crowds here as Evertonians are eager to return to the top.”

Regarding the performance, Moyes added: “Our goalkeeper [Jordan Pickford] made a couple of excellent saves that could have altered the game, but I think it’s difficult to argue that we didn’t deserve to win that match.

“Chelsea were competing in the last 16 of the Champions League, so the level they possess is high; we may have just caught them [after] their midweek match and gained an advantage from that.”
