Chelsea skipper Reece James agrees to a new six-year deal, extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2032.

Reece James has officially signed a new six-year agreement with Chelsea, ensuring his presence at Stamford Bridge until 2032, as announced by the club.
At 26 years old, James has been with Chelsea since he was six and was appointed club captain in 2023.
His prior contract was set to end in 2028, but Chelsea has proactively extended his deal to prevent it from entering its final year, thus avoiding the possibility of James departing on a free transfer, similar to the exits of Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen to Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively.
James has made 225 appearances for Chelsea and played a vital role in the team that secured the 2021 Champions League title and last summer’s Club World Cup.
He signed his initial professional contract in March 2017 and received the Academy Player of the Season award, while also leading the team to victory in the Youth FA Cup.
James’ only time away from Chelsea was during a loan at Wigan, where he excelled primarily in midfield and was honored as the club’s Player of the Season.
Since returning to Cobham ahead of the 2019/20 season, James has been an essential part of Chelsea’s setup and, after overcoming injuries, has solidified his status as a key player for both Enzo Maresca and now Liam Rosenior, excelling in his preferred right-back position as well as in midfield.
Upon signing, James expressed to Chelsea’s official website: “I am over the moon to have extended my contract — Chelsea means so much to me.

“I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes.
“I’m excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years.”
Sporting Directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart stated: “On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract.
“He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch. Reece knows what it means to wear this badge and, having committed his long-term future to Chelsea, we’re looking forward to continuing the journey and working towards further success together.”
