Michael Carrick stated that Manchester United “definitely” does not wish to part ways with Bruno Fernandes this summer, despite ongoing uncertainty regarding his long-term position at Old Trafford.

In a December interview with Portuguese media, Fernandes indicated that he might depart the club at the season’s conclusion—12 months after rejecting a lucrative offer from Al Hilal.

The 31-year-old is contracted until at least 2027, although his agreement includes a release clause set at approximately £57 million.

Nevertheless, Carrick emphasizes that United aims to retain him.

“Regarding the club and future developments, it’s challenging for me to engage too deeply in that,” remarked the United head coach following Fernandes’ two assists in the 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“Bruno is certainly not someone we would want to lose, I can affirm that, but as for the summer and beyond, it’s tough for me to elaborate too much on that. However, he is crucial for us and definitely not one we would wish to let go.”

Fernandes’ two assists against Villa brought his total to 16 in the Premier League this season, surpassing David Beckham’s United record of 15 established in 1999-2000.

His first assist came from a corner that allowed Casemiro to head in the opening goal.

The Brazilian, who is expected to depart in the summer, was greeted with chants of “one more year, one more year, Casemiro” from the home supporters.

However, Carrick indicated that a reversal of this decision is improbable.

“I believe when a decision is made, it simplifies things somewhat, and everyone comprehends the situation,” he stated. “The impact he has made has been remarkable, especially since I have been here and working alongside him.

“He plays a significant role within the team during crucial moments and goals. I think it was a lovely moment at the end with the supporters, showcasing that connection and respect, I believe.

“That was a nice moment. I think he will appreciate that.”

The outcome was significant for United’s ongoing effort to secure a Champions League position for the next season, placing Carrick’s team in third place with 54 points and eight matches remaining.
