Aston Villa anticipates 'unique' semifinal clash with Forest 1

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is eagerly anticipating a “special” Europa League semifinal against Nottingham Forest after securing a 7-1 aggregate victory over Bologna.

Villa entered the match with confidence following a 3-1 win in the first leg, and Ollie Watkins initiated a first-half onslaught by netting his 13th goal of the season and third of the tie.

Emi Buendia doubled Villa’s advantage less than a minute after Morgan Rogers had a penalty saved, but the England international redeemed himself by scoring to put the hosts ahead 3-0 before halftime, with Ezri Konsa adding a second goal of the tie to complete a dominant victory late in the match.

Villa has arranged an all-Premier League encounter with Vitor Pereira’s Reds in the semifinals, vying for a spot in the final in Istanbul.

The two sides faced each other just last week, ending in a 1-1 draw at the City Ground.

Emery remarked: “It’s significant for both teams, and we share a common history, as both clubs have won the European Cup.

“They have experienced their moments in European competition at the highest level throughout their history, just as we have.

“Competing in the semifinal is crucial for us and for them. It promises to be an exciting semifinal for both teams and their supporters; we are enjoying our current form.

“We aim to cherish each moment with our supporters, as we did today at Villa Park, feeling excited and motivated.

“This semifinal holds special significance for both teams as it presents an opportunity to compete at this stage, and I understand how challenging it is to reach a semifinal.”

Emery expressed satisfaction with how his team concluded the match with three rapid first-half goals.

He added: “Today we maintained the same game plan as last week in Bologna, showing respect for them and the competition.

“Certainly, the collective performance across both matches has been remarkable, albeit challenging.

“We won this match decisively, but that was due to our serious approach to the game.

“Today we emphasized starting differently than last week and being ruthless in the final third, which made the difference.”

Watkins marked his 100th goal for the club with Villa’s opening strikeβ€”his fourth goal in this competition this season.

The England forward has faced challenges in finding the net at various points during this campaign, but Emery praised his resolve.

“Individual statistics are significant for the players,” he stated. “Indeed, today is a notable day for Watkins as he achieved this milestone through a collective goal since we are in the semifinal.

“However, we aim to assist and support them in reaching their individual objectives.

“We require him [Watkins] to score goals, accumulate numbers, and provide assists. Other players, like Buendia, Rogers, and Konsa today, are also needed to contribute goals.

“But particularly as we strive to support our players in achieving their statistics, strikers hold great importance. Today was Watkins’ day.”
