Arne Slot: Liverpool's loss to Brighton 'stings significantly' 1

Arne Slot expressed that Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion “hurts a lot” and acknowledged that his team’s performance this season has not met expectations.

Danny Welbeck netted two goals at the Amex, securing all three points for the home side and delivering a significant setback to Liverpool’s hopes for Champions League qualification.

“Certainly, looking at the league standings now, this defeat is painful and it should be for us,” Slot stated. “However, the primary issue is that we find ourselves in this situation due to dropping points against Wolves in the final moments from a deflected shot. That [Tottenham] goal last week in the 90th minute is, I would argue, an even greater concern than losing away at Brighton.”

Liverpool were missing both Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker for their match on the south coast, while Hugo Ekitike was forced off with an injury early in the first half.

When asked if he anticipates that outsiders might feel sympathy for his team given the £450 million ($602m) spent in last summer’s transfer window, Slot replied: “No, I fully understand that sentiment from those who express it because no one in England is accustomed to the fact that there are clubs that also sell players.”

“Typically in England, when a club invests £450 million as we did, it is seen as an addition to an already strong squad.”

“However, this club operates under a different model, and it seems that many do not wish to acknowledge this, which I can comprehend since fans of other teams and certain analysts prefer not to mention that we sold players for £300 million ($401m).

“Consequently, the £150 million ($201m) player is not available. That is one factor, and Giovanni Leoni has also been unavailable due to injury. That is another issue, and now we are already below what we have sold. Jeremie Frimpong has recently been more available, and Mamardashvili was one of the signings, the second goalkeeper.”

“Indeed, it is entirely reasonable that if you won the league last season and spent £450 million, expectations would be elevated, and those expectations were high for pundits, the media, myself, and the fans. At our club, we are also assessing the situation and the challenges we faced this season, and we might need to adopt a more realistic perspective on why the season has unfolded as it has. Nevertheless, it is still not sufficient regardless of the excuses I could provide; it remains inadequate for our current standing.”

When asked for an update on Liverpool’s injured players, Slot added: “Alisson will definitely be out during the international break. Hugo could play tomorrow if necessary. It was a dead leg.”

“Brighton executed what we anticipated, especially when facing a team that had only 62 hours of rest. Their first move was to make it an intense match. There was nothing wrong with the challenges, but unfortunately, a collision resulted in Hugo’s exit.

“After just two minutes, coping without Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Hugo… we had to adapt by placing players in unfamiliar positions. We managed this relatively well in the first half, but as the match progressed, Brighton grew stronger.

“Throughout the second half, they were closer to scoring a third goal than we were to equalizing at 2-2.”
