SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The legendary boxer George Foreman is interred in a cemetery located in the northwestern part of Iowa, a region with which he has no ties apart from a solitary visit nearly four decades ago.

Foreman passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76 in Houston, and was laid to rest in Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa, a month later, as confirmed by city officials. On Thursday, Foreman’s family returned to his gravesite, conducting a news conference alongside Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott to disclose the location of Foreman’s burial, which is marked by a prominent monument featuring an image of him as a young man after winning his Olympic gold medal in boxing.

The family shared in a statement issued by Sioux City officials that he had visited the city in 1988 and frequently reminisced about the tranquility he felt during that time.

After traveling to the city on April 17 of the previous year to inter Foreman, his family expressed that they quickly recognized the allure of the area.

“Our father lived a life of purpose, faith and gratitude,” the family stated in a release from Sioux City officials. “To see him laid to rest in a place that brought him peace means everything to us.”

Scott accompanied the family at Foreman’s monument, situated just a few miles north of the Missouri River in a city of nearly 87,000 residents in the upper Midwest. The cemetery offers a view of the picturesque Loess Hills, formed by windblown silt deposits that rise up to 200 feet (approximately 61 meters) and stretch along the river for 200 miles (322 kilometers) along the Iowa border.

“Their story serves as a reminder of how a single location can resonate with someone throughout their life,” Scott remarked.

A native of Texas, Foreman gained prominence by making the 1968 U.S. Olympic boxing team, where he secured a gold medal in Mexico City. He became the heavyweight champion of the world in 1973 by defeating the renowned Joe Frazier, only to lose the title the following year to Muhammad Ali in the iconic “Rumble in the Jungle.”

Two decades later, in 1994, Foreman made history as the oldest individual to win the heavyweight championship at the age of 45, achieving a stunning victory over Michael Moorer.

Foreman retired in 1997 with a career record of 76 wins and 5 losses.

He subsequently transitioned to a new phase in his life as a businessman, spokesperson, and occasional actor, becoming recognized by a new generation as the face of the George Foreman Grill. This straightforward cooking appliance sold over 100 million units and generated greater wealth for him than his boxing career.

A biographical film about Foreman’s life was released in 2023.
