Ryan Garcia says Conor Benn is nothing more than an “average fighter” and that the Briton does not deserve a shot at his WBC welterweight title.

Garcia, 28, makes the first defence of his belt against Benn at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The American has consistently dismissed Benn’s ability during the build-up and, after skipping Tuesday’s face-off, has been accused overlooking the 29-year-old.

But Garcia says he is not taking anything lightly as he aims for a 26th win in 29 bouts as a professional.

Asked whether Benn, who has not fought at welterweight since April 2022, deserves the opportunity to challenge for a world title, Garcia said: “Not at all.”

He told BBC Sport: “He’s an average fighter, he’s athletic and it’s his last name. It’s not a shot at him; it’s just the bitter truth.

“I’m preparing like he’s the best fighter in the world. It’s all about preparation and how sharp you are.

“People could say you’re overlooking him. No, I’m calling it how I see it.

“Do you want me to say he’s as good as Floyd Mayweather? He’s not.

“He’s alright. He comes forward and throws looping overhands. He’s aggressive and will make him a rugged fight, but it’s not something I haven’t seen before.”

Garcia and Benn have documented their fight camps on social media, but have presented their preparations in different ways.

Benn has posted videos of his training regime, while Garcia has been collaborating with influencers and making appearances in the WWE.

“He’s not my cup of tea. I wouldn’t want to hang out with him too much,” Garcia said.

“He’s a bit of a hypocrite and contradicts himself a lot. I am who I am – goofy and outgoing, making jokes and having fun.

“He is trying to say he’s humble, but he’s out here any chance in a Rolls Royce. He loves the lights.

“He thinks I’m like that, but I’m focused on my craft 100%.”
