In her inaugural clay-court WTA 1000 event of the season, Alex Eala made a strong impression, demonstrating poise and mastery on this surface.

The world No. 44 from the Philippines secured a solid 6-3, 6-3 victory over experienced Russian player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the round of 128 at the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday evening (Philippine time).

This encounter marked their first meeting, with Eala replicating her Madrid performance from the previous two years — now positioned to advance further in the tournament.

The initial exchanges were closely contested, with the 34-year-old Pavlyuchenkova controlling the early rallies and maintaining her hold through the first four games. However, Eala’s steady play from the baseline and enhanced shot selection allowed her to keep her service games intact, leveling the score at 2-2.

From that point, the 20-year-old turned the match in her favor.

A timely break in the fifth game shifted the momentum, as Eala began to extend rallies and induce errors from the Russian’s side. This break paved the way for a three-game run to 4-2, placing her firmly in command of the set.

Recognizing the opportunity, Eala remained assertive on return and achieved another break in the ninth game, concluding the set 6-3 with confidence and accuracy.

Eala maintained that same baseline discipline into the second set, gaining an early advantage with a break in the fourth game to lead 3-1.

The set briefly became chaotic, as both competitors exchanged breaks in rapid succession.

Pavlyuchenkova finally got on the scoreboard with her first break in the fifth game, but Eala quickly responded in the following game to regain control at 4-2. From that moment, the Filipina found her rhythm again — serving effectively and dictating the pace of rallies.

Both players held their serves for the remainder of the match, but Eala never relinquished her lead, finishing the match with the same 6-3 scoreline for a composed straight-sets victory.

The advantage ultimately lay in her serving. Eala achieved 68% of her first serves and won 76% of those points, a distinct edge over Pavlyuchenkova’s 58% and 50% respectively.

Next, Eala faces a more challenging opponent in the round of 64 against 19th seed Elise Mertens from Belgium, as she aims to build on this impressive opening performance in Madrid.
