MADRID — Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has cast uncertainty on his participation in the French Open due to a right wrist injury.

Medical evaluations in the coming days will ascertain whether Alcaraz can compete in the Grand Slam event next month, he stated on Monday.

“We’ll see,” he responded when questioned about his playing status. The Spaniard attended the Laureus Awards in Madrid with his right wrist in a brace. He withdrew from the Madrid Open last week.

“The upcoming (medical) test will be critical,” the seven-time Grand Slam titleholder remarked to Spanish television channel TVE.

“We have been doing everything possible to ensure that this test yields positive results. I am trying to remain very patient. But we are in a good place, just waiting a bit. We have several tests scheduled in the next few days, and then we will assess the injury and determine the next steps.”

Ranked No. 2, Alcaraz pulled out of the Barcelona tournament a day after receiving treatment for his wrist during his first match, which he won 6-4, 6-2 against Otto Virtanen.

The next event following Madrid is the Italian Open, which he claimed last year.

“For now, I have been focusing on staying positive and maintaining a good outlook, even though these days have felt somewhat prolonged,” said the 22-year-old Alcaraz, who received the Laureus world sportsman of the year award on Monday.
