MILAN – Game 7.

These are two of the most thrilling words during the Stanley Cup Playoffs that resonate with hockey enthusiasts. A series reaching a winner-take-all Game 7 is essential viewing.

At the 2026 Olympic Winter Games, the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team must secure victories in three consecutive Game 7s to claim a coveted gold medal.

The elimination rounds have officially commenced in Milan, with the U.S. set to compete against Sweden on Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. ET (NBC | Peacock) in the quarterfinals at Milano Santagiulia Arena. Sweden advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Latvia, 5-2, on Tuesday, while the U.S. received a bye after topping Group C.

“As this tournament progresses, the stakes increase, and the competition intensifies. I believe our players are eager for that challenge,” stated Mike Sullivan, head coach of the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, following the team’s 5-1 win over Germany.

“It’s a Game 7 situation. The winner advances. These players understand that. They have experienced various circumstances similar to this. The key for us is to focus on what we can control and work on our game. We will put our best performance on the ice and see where that leads us. We have confidence in our group. We believe we are constructed well, possess considerable talent, and are ready for the challenge.”

Matthew Tkachuk is familiar with Game 7 scenarios. He played a pivotal role in helping the Florida Panthers secure their first of two consecutive Stanley Cup titles when they triumphed over the Edmonton Oilers in seven games in 2024. Last year, the Panthers clinched the Cup in six games.

In 94 playoff games throughout his career, Tkachuk has recorded 32 goals and 52 assists.

While Tkachuk acknowledged that the Olympics present a different challenge, he noted two qualities that he and Jack Eichel, who won the Stanley Cup in 2023 with the Vegas Golden Knights in six games, bring to the U.S. team.

“It’s quite different,” Tkachuk remarked. “However, any time you achieve (winning a Stanley Cup), it likely contributes. We are very passionate yet composed, and I believe those are two essential traits to possess.”

Jake Guentzel won a Stanley Cup in 2017 with the Pittsburgh Penguins while under Sullivan’s coaching. Overall, all 25 players on the U.S. roster have participated in high-stakes games at various levels throughout their youth, junior, collegiate, and professional careers.

Nonetheless, Sullivan emphasizes that his team is always seeking improvement.

“I don’t think we ever reach a final destination,” Sullivan expressed. “That is the beauty of our sport. We are constantly striving to become a better version of ourselves each day. That is part of the process. We aim to evolve every day we are together.”

Clayton Keller served as the captain of the 2025 U.S. Men’s National Team that ended a 92-year championship drought at the IIHF Men’s World Championship, and he remarked that single-elimination games are experiences one dreams of as a child.

“Those are the most enjoyable games to participate in,” Keller stated. “I played a bit at the World Championships last year, which was single elimination, so it’s somewhat similar, but this is obviously on a larger scale. The games you watch as a child are these, so it’s incredibly exciting.”

“Any time you can compete in high-pressure situations, it’s beneficial to experience that, learn from mistakes, and so forth. That experience is invaluable.”

Zach Werenski was also part of the gold-medal-winning World Championship team and anticipates a tough matchup against Sweden on Wednesday.

"That is a significant challenge," Werenski noted. "They are extremely skilled. Many of their players are familiar faces from the NHL season. I believe all of them play in the NHL; they possess a lot of talent.

"When we faced them in the 4 Nations, it was a challenging game. I expect a similar experience in the quarterfinals if that is our opponent."

Tkachuk added, “They are one of the top teams globally and have performed exceptionally well in this tournament. I think every single player is in the NHL, so we are quite familiar with many of those players. A lot of us compete against them regularly; they are a very strong team from top to bottom.”

The U.S. concluded pool play with a record of 3-0, outscoring their opponents 16-5.

Connor Hellebuyck is 2-0 and has saved 38 of 40 shots, and he expressed to reporters on Tuesday after practice that he is eager for the challenges ahead.

“This is thrilling,” Hellebuyck stated. “This is the reason I play the game. I don’t pursue money or fame. I play for enjoyment. These are the moments I truly cherish.”

Captain Auston Matthews leads the U.S. with three goals and two assists, and he believes the U.S. has consistently made progress in each of its three preliminary round matches.

Now, Sweden is on the horizon.

“The confidence within our group continues to grow,” Matthews remarked after the United States’ victory over Germany. “The chemistry is improving; we are becoming more comfortable with one another, especially when playing with new teammates. With each game, we are making strides in the right direction as we prepare for the quarterfinals, and it’s encouraging to see that progress.”

Sullivan mentioned on Wednesday after the morning skate that the team values the support it continues to receive.

"We've had incredible support at all of our games," Sullivan said. "There's a large American presence here, and I know it means a lot to our players. It certainly means a lot to us. I am confident they will be out tonight and will make their presence felt."
