Wembanyama reaffirms MVP pursuit following 41-point performance 1

SAN FRANCISCO — Following a commanding performance with 41 points and 18 rebounds in a decisive road victory on Wednesday night, San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama emphasized to ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt that the MVP award is firmly within his aspirations.

“I genuinely care about it,” Wembanyama stated to ESPN. “I believe that the legends enshrined in the Hall of Fame — or the greatest of all time — have fought hard and seized every opportunity early in their careers. If I aim to secure my place among the legends, I must strive to capitalize on every chance to elevate my name.”

The Spurs are currently on a winning streak. They traveled to San Francisco on Wednesday night and overwhelmed the shorthanded Golden State Warriors, leading throughout and concluding with a 127-113 victory after establishing a double-digit lead within three minutes.

San Antonio has achieved 10 consecutive wins overall and 15 straight games in which Wembanyama has participated. During this run, Wembanyama has recorded point totals of 10, 38, 27, 29, 39, 32, 21, 18, 34, 20, 26, 19, 23, 41, and 41, along with rebound totals of 8, 16, 10, 8, 11, 12, 13, 8, 12, 8, 15, 15, 15, 16, and 18.

This five-game streak of 15-rebound performances is the longest by a Spurs player since Dennis Rodman in 1995, surpassing both Tim Duncan’s and David Robinson’s best four-game streaks of 15 or more rebounds.

“Wow,” Wembanyama remarked regarding the statistic. “I have watched many highlights [of Rodman], primarily with the Bulls. They don’t produce players like [him] anymore.”

The Spurs have a record of 26-2 in their last 28 games, intensifying the competition with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the top seed. The Thunder currently lead the Spurs by two games with six games remaining, but San Antonio possesses the tiebreaker due to a 4-1 head-to-head record.

The reigning MVP and current frontrunner for the award, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, is also finishing strong. Oklahoma City has secured 15 victories in its last 16 games, and Gilgeous-Alexander is on another scoring surge, surpassing 40 points three times in the past two weeks.

Even if Wembanyama does not secure the MVP title, he is widely regarded as a frontrunner for his first Defensive Player of the Year award. Before Wednesday’s matchup, Warriors coach Steve Kerr labeled Wembanyama “obviously the best defensive player in the league.” After the game, Kerr continued to commend Wembanyama’s development.

“He possesses incredible confidence now,” Kerr noted. “He appears to know precisely what to do on both ends. In his initial years, he sometimes looked young. He no longer appears young. He just seems to have a clear understanding of his role. He dominated the boards. There were plays where it seemed impossible to counter. Several lobs resembled a Nerf hoop. He’s exceptional.”
