DENVER — Jamal Murray achieved a season-high 53 points, while Nikola Jokic contributed 23 points, 21 rebounds, and a season-best 19 assists, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 142-135 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.

During Denver’s fourth consecutive win, Jokic reached his 6,000th career assist. The Nuggets (46-28) are currently tied for fourth place with Minnesota, which secured a win against Houston in overtime on Wednesday. Denver holds the tiebreaker due to winning the season series against the Timberwolves.

Jokic began the game with 5,992 assists and achieved the milestone by assisting Murray for a layup with 4:56 remaining in the second quarter. This was part of a 33-point first half for Murray, who shot 11-of-16 from the field and scored 14 consecutive points at one point.

Dallas reduced an 11-point deficit to 127-126 with 4:20 left in the fourth quarter and had an opportunity to equalize, but Brandon Williams missed two free throws with 3:58 remaining, allowing Denver to regain control.

Jokic made an 8-foot floater and assisted Peyton Watson for a corner 3-pointer, while Murray added a 3-pointer and a 19-foot step-back jumper to extend the lead to 138-128.

Murray, whose career high stands at 55 points, finished the game shooting 19-of-28 and made 9 of 14 attempts from beyond the arc.

Rookie Cooper Flagg scored 26 points and Naji Marshall added 22 for the Mavericks, who have now lost five consecutive games and 24 of their last 28 since late January.

Dallas had narrowed a 13-point gap to 93-92 late in the third quarter, but Jokic scored six points and provided three assists in the final 2:51, helping Denver to a 111-100 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
