Lakers, seeking assistance in the backcourt, secure new contract with Nick Smith Jr.

The Los Angeles Lakers are finalizing a two-year contract with two-way guard Nick Smith Jr., as confirmed by his agent Lucas Newton of Klutch Sports to ESPN on Sunday.
With key guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves unavailable, the Lakers are enhancing their backcourt options ahead of the playoffs.
As they approach Sunday’s regular-season conclusion against the Utah Jazz, the Lakers are positioned as the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. A victory over the Jazz, combined with a loss by the Denver Nuggets to the San Antonio Spurs, could elevate them to the No. 3 spot.
Throughout 29 games this season, Smith has recorded an average of 6 points and 1 assist, while shooting 40% from beyond the arc in 12.3 minutes per game.
