CHICAGO — Further imaging on Chicago Bulls guard Anfernee Simons’ injured left wrist revealed that he has exacerbated a prior fracture, coach Billy Donovan stated on Tuesday prior to the matchup against the Charlotte Hornets.

Simons, who was obtained in a trade that involved sending center Nikola Vucevic to Boston at the trade deadline earlier this month, exited Chicago’s 126-110 defeat to Detroit on Saturday with what was described as a “sprain” and did not participate in the second half.

Donovan noted that Simons, 26, initially sustained the fracture while playing for the Celtics, referring to it as “an old injury,” and did not provide a specific timeline for Simons’ return.

“The fracture hasn’t fully healed, and I think after consulting with a hand specialist, they believe that once the pain decreases, he will be cleared to return to play,” Donovan explained. “The last occurrence was during training camp in Boston, which took about a week or 10 days to recover.”

In six games and five starts with the Bulls, Simons has recorded an average of 15.2 points and 28.4 minutes on the court.

During 49 games with the Celtics this season, Simons averaged 14.2 points in 24.5 minutes. He was selected as Portland’s first-round draft pick in 2018 and spent the first seven of his eight NBA seasons with the Trail Blazers before being traded to Boston for Jrue Holiday in July.

The Bulls entered Tuesday amidst a season-high nine-game losing streak.
