NEW YORK — The U.S. Tennis Association announced on Wednesday that 27.3 million individuals in the U.S. participated in tennis in 2025, marking a new record in its sixth consecutive year of growth.

Participation in recreational tennis surged during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and has increased by 54% in the U.S. since 2019, as indicated by the results of an independent study.

Over half of the participants, totaling 14.5 million, engaged in the sport 10 or more times in 2025. Additionally, there were 4.9 million newcomers to the sport, reflecting a 9% rise.

The USTA aims to reach 35 million players by 2035. Progress was made last year with increases in participation among women (1.1 million more, a 10% rise), Black individuals (450,000, a 14% increase), Hispanics (550,000, a 12% rise), and Asian/Pacific Islanders (260,000, a 10% increase).

The reported figures were derived from an analysis conducted by the National Golf Foundation (NGF) based on studies performed by the Physical Activity Council (PAC) Study on Sports and Physical Activity and the PLAY Study (previously known as the Participation and Engagement Study).
