Emma Raducanu secures victory in Indian Wells opener with commanding performance.
Emma Raducanu delivered an impressive performance in Indian Wells, achieving a decisive 6-1 6-3 win over Anastasia Zakharova to advance to the last 32.
Raducanu entered the WTA 1000 event on a three-match losing streak, keen to regain her form following her January separation from coach Francisco Roig.
With former coach Mark Petchey back in her corner on a temporary basis, Raducanu showcased an excellent display to comfortably defeat qualifier Zakharova at the BNP Paribas Open.
Dressed in a light blue outfit from her new Japanese sponsor Uniqlo, an ace in Raducanu’s first service game hinted at what was to follow.
The world No. 24 quickly followed this with a break against Zakharova, establishing a 3-0 advantage.
Zakharova managed to get on the scoreboard in the subsequent service game, but Raducanu responded with another ace before breaking again, earning praise from Petchey, who was watching from the sidelines.
The first set concluded in 32 minutes, with Raducanu securing a break in the third game of the second set.

With Raducanu’s ball-striking proving too challenging for Zakharova, the 2021 US Open champion maintained her control throughout the first-round match.
A minor setback occurred during the eighth game when Raducanu had to recover from 15-40, but she responded effectively.
Although Zakharova managed to break when Raducanu was poised to serve for the match, the 23-year-old quickly regrouped and clinched victory in the following game, marking a much-needed strong start in Indian Wells.
