ORLANDO, Fla. — Craig Tiley is set to assume the role of CEO of the U.S. Tennis Association this year, as announced by the organization that oversees the U.S. Open on Tuesday.

Tiley is departing from his position as the leader of Tennis Australia and the tournament director for its Grand Slam event, the Australian Open.

The USTA indicated in a news release that Tiley will commence his new role in the upcoming months.

He succeeds Lew Sherr, who left the USTA last year to become the president of business operations for the New York Mets. Sherr had served as the USTA’s CEO since 2022.

Originally from South Africa, Tiley was the head coach of the men’s tennis team at the University of Illinois from 1994 to 2005, during which time he led the team to an NCAA championship and a perfect 32-0 record in 2003.

He has been the tournament director of the Australian Open since 2006, overseeing its growth into a 15-day event that set new attendance and revenue records. Tiley became the CEO of Tennis Australia in 2013.

“Craig offers a unique blend of international credibility at the highest levels of the sport and a demonstrated dedication to fostering the game at the grassroots level. This balance is precisely what is needed at this time,” stated Brian Vahaly, the chair of the USTA Board and the interim co-CEO of the USTA.
